I love summer! We have spent the first part of it swimming, cousins, library, movie days, tons of laughter and of course yummy food! Now, with the Fourth of July and my birthday (often celebrated together) right around the corner, I’ve changed gears and am packing the fridge full of all our favorite BBQ foods!
Which brings me to….why are there always more hot dog buns then hot dogs? I mean really!? What is the deal? (A “Father of the Bride” hot dog bun movie moment often pops into my head while I stare at the extra buns) Besides, two of my three lil’ monsters don’t even like the bun.
Faced with such a dilemma as this, I found a fun way to turn those extra (or in my case, unwanted) hot dog buns into deliciously devourable DESSERT DOGS! With just a few simple ingredients (most of which already live in my pantry), I made these amazingly tasty treats! Seriously! We couldn’t eat them fast enough, and they are a new favorite at our dessert table!
Through mouthfuls of yummy we’ve named a few variant Dessert Dog styles. You can make these with pretty much anything you want and could toss on a slice of bread, but here are some flavor combinations that we really enjoyed!
What you will need:
- Hot dog buns
- Peanut Butter
- Nutella
- Cream Cheese
- Bananas
- Strawberries
- Blueberries
- Chocolate Chips
- Chocolate Syrup
PB Choco-Chip Explosion
Peanut Butter, Banana & Chocolate chips. Spread the peanut butter on both sides of the bun. Cut a banana in half and slice lengthwise (down the middle) and lay atop the PB bun. I liked to add a little extra PB on top of the banana slices so that the chocolate chips have lots to stick too. Sprinkles generously with (lots and lots!) of chocolate chips. The mini chips work really well for this!
Heaven on a Bun
Blueberry Cheese”bun” Delight
Our colorful and yummy Dessert Dogs will put an end to all your leftover bun woes, and just in time for your Fourth of July gatherings. Another idea is to have a DIY Dessert Dog bar. Offer up a variety of fixings and let your BBQ guests make their own combinations. They are so easy to make, and will certainly impress and satisfy!
